October 2024 | Phonebox Magazine 51Strange as it seems, we actually have two summers, namely the meteorological and astronomical. The meteorological year consists of splitting the seasons into four periods of three months each. Seasons are split to coincide with the Gregorian calendar, making it easier to observe, forecast and compare seasonal and monthly statistics. The Meteorological summer, therefore, always begins on 1st June and ends on 31st August. 2024 saw the astronomical summer begin on 20nd June and end on 22nd September, so by the time you read this, both summers will be over for another year. There are no seasons at CRMK, although it could be argued that summer sees more presenter absenteeism because of holidays, although winter illnesses may counter that argument! That said, presenters can record shows for techies to load on the system, so no shows need to be missed. Recording shows can be done via numerous free digital audio editing and recording applications. Many of our presenters do this every week. Between Two Worlds Kev, for example, has prerecorded his progressive rock show since the day Boris announced lockdown, but what does Between Two Worlds Kev miss?In short, Kev misses the jeopardy of broadcasting live which is what many presenters want and indeed, thrive on. The very nature of presenting a show live is both intoxicating and exciting. Equipment can fail. You can stumble over words. You can worry, but does it really matter if things go wrong? It%u2019s how you overcome issues that really matter. Jeopardy only adds to the enjoyment. The fi rst rule though is to turn up on time. If applicable, allow a minimum of 10 minutes for a presenter changeover. Show preparation begins at home. Ensure you have everything you need with the emphasis on the music. This can be found on memory sticks, CDs, records, tablets, laptops etc. Have you got your headphones, script, playlist and sustenance to see you through your show?Following on from another presenter is pretty easy as there is not too much to do. If not following someone, then you have to go through the set-up process of switching on relevant equipment, opening any programmes needed, such as our jingle palette and ensuring the correct channels are open.%u00a0It is sometimes the case that someone has adjusted mixer settings and/or switched everything off . This creates untold issues for those who may not be au fait with computers as they would need rebooting. This eats into studio show preparation time. It is therefore imperative presenters leave the studio ready for the next presenter with all default settings in place. This does not always happen though. It may sound complicated but it is actually a simple process to get online and go live. In case of issues, there is a crib sheet, and we have an online help service. Once the %u2018go live%u2019 button is pressed, it%u2019s time to relax and enjoy presenting a show as this is after all a hobby, for all seasons.contactus@crmk.co.ukwww.crmk.co.ukLive or recorded?CRMK RADIOGeorgian Dancers of Amazing Grace:Come and join us!Georgian Dancers of Amazing Grace are affi liated with the Cowper & Newton Museum in Olney. After an appeal for a tutor, Stuart Tranter of Cheek to Cheek School of Dance off ered to help, and within four weeks, the group had learnt the fi rst dance and performed it as part of the Museum%u2019s Georgian Day event.Roy and Jo Walker, who were experienced Playford Dancers (dances from the late 17th and early to mid 18th century), decided to attend the event as they were looking for a group to join. Impressed by the progress that the group had made in only four weeks, they off ered to help in any way that they could. The result was that they ended up running the group and expanding its repertoire to facilitate public performances not only at the Museum but at a number of care homes and National Trust properties. The group have also been featured on TV in Celebrity Antiques Roadshow, and performed before Prince William when he visited Milton Keynes as part of Milton Keynes Festival of History. They are now looking to expand the numbers and are on the look out for both men and women.
