54 Phonebox Magazine | October 2024OLNEY & CLIFTON FISHING ASSOCIATIONThe club%u2019s showpiece match, the Ron Bull Open, has taken place for another year. For the last month, our maintenance team has been out on the banks strimming, raking, and getting over 70 pegs up to competition quality. What a job they did. I would encourage any of our pleasure angler members to get themselves to any of the pegs used or those kept in reserve because last Sunday they all looked perfect. In the days proceeding the match, we had the fi rst frosts of the year, then the night before, cold rain went into the river, so on the morning, the anglers thought the fishing might be tough, and for much of the fi eld, this was the case with only fi ve men ending up with double fi gure bags. The roach and dace, which normally provide the winning catch, were proving diffi cult, and in the cold water conditions, it was chub that was to decide the match. Hollywood LOCAL SPORT ROUNDUPscriptwriters would have been hardpressed to better the actual story of the match as Steve Bull, fi shing peg 15 the Runway at Olney Mill, had eight chub, which took his winning weight to 18lbs 12oz. Nigel Bass had some late chub to boost his catch into second place from the Stump peg next to the third plank, and recent winner Grant Howie had over 10lbs of perch from the end peg in Doff %u2019s to fi nish third.%u00a0I think many of the anglers didn%u2019t know whether to laugh or cry when Steve received the trophy from Ron%u2019s widow Sheila, Steve%u2019s stepmum, for the match dedicated to his dad%u2019s memory. A fi tting end to a great day.
